An introduction to cob-building

Sunday 16th August 2015, 10am – 4pm

Mud, mud, glorious mud, nothing quite like it for building…..well, anything!

Cob is a mixture of sand, straw and clay. It has been used as a building material since prehistoric times. This one day course will teach you to the basic principles of using cob as a building material, with a chance to get stuck in and raise structures from the earth itself. You’ll leave with the skills and confidence to create your own cob projects at home or in your local community. Fancy a pizza oven, how about a bench or a garden wall? The course includes:

  • The benefits and uses of cob
  • The principles of monolithic cob, cob bricks, cordwood cob and mud rendering
  • How to source local materials to make your cob mix

All participants will have a chance to mix and build the walls for a roundhouse project on site.

The course will be led by green building enthusiasts from Capel Manor College. Join them to learn about and to try for yourself this fun and accessible building technique. All necessary equipment and course materials will be provided.

Places are £55 per person, plus an online booking fee. The course fee includes an organic lunch and all refreshments. Maximum of ten places.
